When McDonald’s Singapore launched the much anticipated BTS Meal on June 21, 2021, ardent fans rejoiced. The limited-edition meal, which can only be ordered through the food delivery apps, comes with 9-piece Chicken McNuggets, Cajun and Sweet Chilli Sauces, Large Fries, and a Large Coke, each packed in a unique bright purple packaging that has been emblazoned with the band’s signature double trapezoid logo. Unsurprisingly, people have reportedly washed and kept these branded packaging before selling them exorbitantly on Carousel.

But there are also a few who have embraced the spirit of upcycling, transforming these packaging into one-of-a-kind jewellery, keychains and many other creative artefacts. In Singapore, local fashion designer and visual artist Josiah Chua has taken upcycling a notch and converted these exclusive cut-outs (from the Chicken McNuggets box, sauce tubs and beverage cups) into a dope pair of sneakers.

Introducing the “collab” you never asked for. The DIY BTS x McDonald’s sneaker is decked in a glorious purple, with its upper made from the McNuggets packaging and cup. The signature Cajun and Sweet Chilli sauce tubs can also be seen snuggly fit on each of the shoe’s laces. And adding a splash of fun to the custom sneaker, Josiah has also weaved in two adorable nugget holsters for your nuggets on the sides too.

For the ARMY and the sneakerheads, the pair of mid-cut sneakers was a hit (or as the expression goes, “DYNAMITE!”). According to Josiah, the pair of DIY sneakers took about four to five hours to conceptualise and create. Coincidentally, the visual artist had been deconstructing sneakers for a separate project and used their leftovers for the spontaneous project. The pair of DIY sneakers is meticulously stitched together with a total of six separate BTS x McDonald’s meals.

In an interview with Nylon Magazine Singapore, Josiah says, “The BTS x McDonald’s meal had just launched and while we were having it for lunch, we decided spontaneously to just upcycle the packaging into something fun.”

The custom sneakers made its debut on Instagram on June 22, 2021, just a day after the BTS Meal launched in Singapore, and it has since received many praises.

As of this writing, Josiah’s pair of DIY BTS sneakers has since attracted the attention from international publications, such as Hypebeast Korea, Koreaboo, Hypebae, Hypebeast, Thrillist Australia, and 103.5 KISS FM Chicago’s #1 Hit Music Station.
