Best Spots In South Korea For Cherry Blossom Viewing
Aside from the cool weather and tasty snacks the spring season bring, one of the things many people look forward to are the appearance of cherry blossoms. It is a famed attraction in countries like South Korea and Japan, drawing thousands of tourists every year.
And if you’re planning to see cherry blossoms on your trip to South Korea, here are the must-go places!
Nami Island
No matter what season it is, Nami Island is always in the itinerary when you visit South Korea. However, the most ideal time to visit is during autumn and spring. When it’s the month of fall, the whole island is enveloped with orange and yellow leaves.
Once winter is over and the snow starts to melt, the cherry blossom trees will slowly come back to life, filling the whole island with the colour pink. The white lanterns also make a good compliment to the whole surroundings.
Going to Nami Island will take you at least 1 hour and 30 minutes from the city.
Jinhae Gunghangje Festival
There are many events in Korea during spring, but the Jinhae Gunghangje Festival is the most recommended one as it is the largest and most beautiful cherry blossom celebration in the country.
The festival usually lasts for 10 days, and visitors can enjoy various activities while taking in the scenic views. Visitors can take pictures over the Yeojwacheon bridge where the hit K-drama “Romance” was shot or have a stroll at the nearby Gyeonghwa station’s railway.
Cherry blossom themed snacks and drinks are also sold so don’t worry about getting hungry!
Seokchon Lake
Since the place is accessible via public transportation, Seokchon Lake is also a must-visit spot if you want to witness cherry blossoms in action during spring. A festival also takes place during this season, usually happening in the first 2 weeks of April.
More than a thousand pink trees surround the pathway between the lakes, so it’s the perfect spot if you want to capture some pictures for your Instagram.
Near the area are the Lotte World Magic Island and the Lotte World Tower Seoul Sky Observatory, so you can also make a side-trip to these places once you are done sightseeing.
Han River
For photographers, Han River is the place to be if you want to get that aesthetic shot. Since it’s near bodies of water, the pink leaves beautifully reflect on the lake, creating that perfect scenery.
This spot is also a recommended place for those who enjoy sporty activities because you can rent roller blades and bikes to ride. There are many picnic areas too, so you can bring some food and a mat if you want to chill.
Convenience stores are also all over Han River, so you can try their iconic self-cook instant ramen noodles!
Seoul Children’s Grand Park
If you have kids or you yourself are a child at heart, visiting Seoul Children’s Grand Park will make the most out of your South Korea trip!
A popular destination during spring thanks to the cherry blossoms trees that are lined up on each side of the road, the 50-year-old amusement park has it all. It has a zoo for animal-lovers, a park if you just want to take in the view; amusement rides for the adventurous, and even a concert hall if you want to watch performances!
But, the highlight during your visit will be the water-fountain music and lights show.
Changgyeonggung Palace
Appreciate South Korea’s rich history while enjoying the cherry blossoms trees when you check out Changgyeonggung Palace located at the heart of Seoul.
The castle was built by King Sejong for his father in the mid-15th century, but was eventually renovated to make it more “modern’, similar to Tokyo’s Ueno Park. The palace is known for group excursions so expect many tourists on your visit.
When it’s a holiday, you can also witness theatre performances, carnival parades and entertainment shows.
Kyunghee University
A school is probably the last place on your mind to see cherry blossom trees, but Kyunghee University is indeed one of the best spots to go to when it’s spring season.
Although it is not that convenient to visit unlike Hongdae and Ewha universities, many still flock the campus because of its unique charm.
The architecture centres on neo-classical European style, so you will not only get to fall in love with cherry blossoms, but also with the beautiful buildings.
Have a safe and fun trip!
