Most Awaited Korean Shows This New Year

It’s the New Year, which means it’s also time for some new shows! Although it’s just the start of 2022, Viu is already filled with awesome Korean programs that we can watch as we ease into January. Stay tuned for the following dramas and movies!

Through The Darkness

Drama: Streaming first on Viu starting January 15th, “Through The Darkness” is a series that will be based on a non-fiction novel written by South Korea’s earliest profiler Kwon Il-yong together with journalist and author Ko Na-mu.

Actor Kim Nam-gil will be playing the lead role as Ha-young, a profiler working at Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Scientific Investigation division. The main plot will revolve around Kwon’s actual field experiences.

If you enjoy watching true crime documentaries on Netflix, then you should definitely add this show on your watch list.

Ghost Doctor

Drama: If you’ve watched the Disney film Ratatouille where the rat control the newbie chef’s action in the kitchen, “Ghost Doctor” follows the same premise – only in the hospital setting.

It stars Rain as Cha Young-min, an arrogant doctor who falls into coma. As his spirit leaves his body, he meets another ghost doctor. Meanwhile, Kim Bum plays the role of Seung-tak, a young resident who is also the grandchild of the hospital’s founder.

The lives of these three doctors will be intertwined and because they have completely opposite personalities, it will be interesting to see how their story will unfold.

Don’t Go Too Far

Movie: They say money is the root of all evil, and this proverb will be proven true in this 2018 film, “Don’t Go Too Far”.

The story starts at a father’s deathbed where his children – three sons and one daughter, gathers. A public notary is also present, so he decides to split his assets worth 2 billion won.

The eldest son, despite getting half of the inheritance, is disappointed with his share. On another hand, the rest of the siblings are splitting the remaining money, getting an event smaller amount.

All of the siblings start to fight because of this, and it gets even worse as the eldest son receives a call that his son is kidnapped with a ransom totalling to 2 billion won.

The Suspect

Movie: This action-thriller film starring Gong Yoo tackles the story of a North Korean Special Forces agent. A change in the political system leaves him being abandoned by his country, so he defects to South Korea.

The series of unfortunate events does not stop there. He then becomes the prime suspect of a murder after getting framed, so he goes on the run. Moreover, a South Korean Intelligence member starts hunting him.

“The Suspect” is a box-office hit during its release, earning a whopping 4.1 million admissions.

Train To Busan

Movie: Almost everyone, whether they’re a fan of Korean films or not, have probably heard of this action-horror movie. “Train To Busan” is the first movie in South Korea to break the audience record of more than 10 million theatregoers, making it one of the most successful motion pictures of all time.

It stars top actors and actresses including Gong Yoo, Ma Dong-seok, Choi Woo-sik, Jung Yu-mi and Ahn Sohee.

The synopsis of the film centres on the story of these main characters, as they try to survive zombies while riding a train bound to Busan.

Memories of The Sword

Movie: Set in the Goryeo era, this martial arts and romance film features the story of three swordsmen played by Lee Byung-hun as Deok-gi, Bae Soo-bin as Poong-cheon and Jeon Do-yeon as Seol-rang.

When a betrayal from Deok-gi leads to Poong-cheon’s death, Seol-rang changes her name and disappears along with Poong-cheon’s baby daughter.

Fast forward to eighteen year’s later, Seol-rang is now blind and raising two children. Wanting to take revenge on her friend-turned-enemy, she teaches Poong-cheon’s child Hong-ee to master the sword.

Tunnel

Movie: If you think you’re having an unlucky day, then this film’s story will change your mind.

Lee Jung-soo (portrayed by Ha Jung-woo) is driving home for his daughter’s birthday. As he passes through a poorly constructed tunnel, it collapses and he gets trapped.

Jung-soo will try to survive with only his phone, two bottles of water and his daughter’s birthday cake while waiting rescue from the accident task force.
