BreadTalk sent a set of their Seoulfully Good collection to our writer at ABC KOREA and here are her thoughts!

Korissants

There are three Korissants in BreadTalk's Seoulfully Good collection. Namely, the Brown Sugar Injeolmi, Cinnamon, and Kimcheese. The Korissants are inspired by the "croffle" trend in the Korean cafe scene where croissants are flattened to create a crispier texture and are usually filled with sweeter ingredients like fruits, ice cream, and whipped cream.

My thoughts: I received the pastries in the late morning, but only started eating them in the late afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised that the croissant was still crispy after all that time! The buttery taste of the croissant and the nutty, slightly sweet taste of the injeolmi powder hits you on the first bit. The soybean custard cream is also well-balanced! It's not too thick such that it's surfeiting, and it offers enough flavour without being overpowering.

Recommended for: Those who enjoy creamier and sweeter breads and are willing to experiment with a flavour not often found in Singapore.

Ingredients: croissant dough, brown sugar, soybean custard cream, soybean powder

Cinnamon Korissant

My thoughts: The taste of this is the simplest of the three Korissants, with just a hint of cinnamon and sugar. I'm someone who's pretty sensitive to strong tastes, and this doesn't taste overly sweetened like a lot of other cinnamon breads out there. But I'm also someone who likes to be adventurous with her food, so this is a little too safe, for my tastebuds.

Recommended for: Those who'd like a good cinnamon croissant after a long day of hard work, and aren't too experimental with gastronomical innovations.

Kimcheese Korissant

Each bite is packed with savoury Kimchi and Mozzarella cheese!

Each bite is packed with savoury Kimchi and Mozzarella cheese!

My thoughts: I was super excited for this and I was not disappointed! Definitely on the savoury end, the kimchi packs a punch without being too sour or sharp. The cheese is light and blends well with the rest of the bread — it kind of remind me of those childhood cheese breads that I used to eat. Hands down my favourite of the three Korissants!

Recommended for: Those who are kimchi lovers! Really, I love kimchi and I love bread so I felt like I tasted what heaven tastes like eating this. 10/10 would buy again and 10/10 would recommend.

Ingredients: Korean kimchi, shredded gouda & mozzarella cheese, kimchi seasoning mix

Others

Aside from their Korissants, BreadTalk has also launched a few pastries and buns inspired by popular Korean street food, or must-haves when eating in Korea. It ranges from sweet, to savoury, and some are even 50-50 in terms of sweetness and savouriness, but 100 in terms of flavour!

Kimchi Jjang

Inspired by Kimchi Pancake — a popular dish in Korea, Kimchi Jjang is packed with savoury kimchi filling and topped with Mozzarella cheese goodness!

My thoughts: When I first held it, it felt soft and spongy, kind of like mochi. I could feel how this was influenced by the Kimchi Pancake. It's similar to the Kimcheese Korissant, but without the croissant. The cheese taste is lighter, but the same great kimchi taste is even stronger! I'd prefer if the bread was slightly crispier like that of a kimchi pancake, but that's just because I like having different textures in my food.

Recommended for: Those who like kimchi, but may not like too strong a cheese taste. Also those who are not fans of croissants but want to try just how great the kimchi is!

Ingredients: Korean kimchi, onion, shredded gouda & mozzarella cheese

Injeolmi Patso

Soft and chewy, this chingu (friend) is filled with red bean almond, soybean custard cream and finished with soybean powder on top.

My thoughts: The injeolmi taste is super strong and really hits you on this one! It's one of the sweeter pastries in the collection, and because it's filled the soybean custard cream, might be slightly too heavy for some. The bread is really soft, so eat carefully or the cream might go everywhere! There's also the red bean almond filling in this, although I didn't taste as much of it as compared to the soybean custard cream.

Recommended for: Those who enjoy sweeter treats! If you're someone who loves adding whipped cream to your ice cream, you're sure to enjoy this one!

Ingredients: red bean almond filling, soybean custard cream, soybean powder

Annyeong Garlic

Crispy golden brown crust baked to perfection with fragrant garlic cream cheese spread within a fluffy bun a savoury treat not to be missed!

My thoughts: It's like an upgraded version of your childhood garlic bread. It's very fragrant and savoury, and the cream cheese filling adds a touch of sweetness to it. The bun is fluffy and comes pre-divided, making it easy to eat (and to share... if you'd be so generous to do so). I found it a little surfeiting after a few pieces, so it's a good thing I was able to share it with my family.

Recommended for: Those who love garlic bread and want to try a new rendition of it! Also great for those who often find the garlic taste in regular garlic breads too pungent and would prefer something lighter.

Ingredients: cream cheese filling, garlic mayonnaise paste, white Japanese bread crumbs

Mandu Mandu

Packed with pork, vegetable, and potato noodle, our rendition of the traditional dumpling from Korea will be a savoury delight for all!

My thoughts: I loved this! It's like the regular mandu that you have in Korean restaurants but instead of having the thin skin it's bread. The bread is very soft, so there's no need for a lot of yanking to bite through it to get to the filling. It's the strongest in terms of the savoury flavour and might be a little salty for those who are very particular about their food — but it was great to me! However, because of its shape, the tail ends of the Mandu Mandu usually have little to no filling and is just bread. So I'd recommend to start from there before eating towards the filling!

Recommended for: Those who love meat and prefer savoury snacks to sweet ones. If you love mandu-guk, or dumpling soup like I do, this is a great substitute for those days when it's a little difficult to sit down for a steaming bowl of mandu-guk!

Ingredients: minced pork, dried black fungus, dried shiitake mushroom, sweet potato noodle, shredded gouda & mozzarella cheese

Egg-Ppang

Inspired by a popular Korean street food, Egg-Ppang is a delightful mix of sweet and savoury treat of egg, shredded cheese and bacon topped on a fluffy bun.

My thoughts: I was really surprised when I first picked it up because it was so dense! It felt more like biting into cake rather than bread. But don't worry, it's still soft and fluffy so you won't crack a tooth eating this. I could taste the signature taste of the gyeran-ppang from back when I went to Myeongdong! It's flaovur isn't over powering, and the sweetness of the bread works well with the savouriness of the bacon and cheese. Although, I must say that I couldn't really taste that much of the bacon, even though I could see it. The Egg-Ppang is also larger than that of the regular gyeran-ppang, so I'd say that only 20% of the bread has the delicious egg yolk, rather that it being about 70% in the ones you'd find at Myeongdong.

Recommended for: Those with miss gyeran-ppang! Mine was cold by the time I ate it, so you might want to heat it up in the oven or microwave for a bit to get an even fuller taste.

Ingredients: egg, bacon, shredded gouda & mozzarella cheese, spring onion

Goguma Roll

Sink your teeth into a soft and airy chiffon roll, infused with sweet potato filling and a pudding centre.

Sink your teeth into a soft and airy chiffon roll, infused with sweet potato filling and a pudding centre.

My thoughts: It's what you'd expect of a chiffon cake: soft and fluffy! I really liked the sweet potato taste, as it was strong enough without being too overpowering. The pudding in the centre also adds texture to the chiffon cake which was something that I enjoyed since it breaks up the monotony of just soft, creamy, cake. Just a note that the pudding is regular pudding, so don't bite into it expecting to taste of sweet potato.

Recommended for: Those who love both sweet potato and chiffon cake! You can get a slice in-stores, but if you'd like the whole roll to share with your family, do order it online at BreadTalk's e-store!

Ingredients: chiffon, sweet potato filling, cake pudding

Yuzu Sarang

yuzu-sarang-words.jpg

A refreshing drink with a light citrus kick to stay cool this Summer!

My thoughts: A light and sweet drink, it's something great for a hot day (which is... everyday...)! Remember to shake the bottle before drinking to mix any the yuzu honey citron tea with the lemon juice well. It might be a little bit difficult to get the bits of citron out without a straw, but you can always just add some water and shake to wash out them out from the bottle and into your awaiting mouth!

Recommended for: Those suffering from the heat that is Singapore weather. Although we don't have the four seasons, it's summer in the Northern hemisphere and the weather's gotten considerably hotter so remember to take care of yourself and cool off on a hot day!

Ingredients: yuzu honey citron tea, sugar syrup, lemon juice

After trying everything in BreadTalk's Seoulfully Good collection, I'd have to say that my favourite was the Kimcheese Korissant and the Mandu Mandu! I love savoury food so these hit all the right buttons for me. If you happen to stop by a BreadTalk store, I highly recommend getting these!

BreadTalk's Seoulfully Good collection is available until 15 August so grab it before it's too late! If it's inconvenient to go out, you can always order online and have it delivered right to your doorstep!
